Harvesting

Harvesting your plants at a specific time will allow for optimal bud growth and THC (potency) output. At a certain level, THC can begin to break down the loss of quality and strength.

There are a many crucial factors to remember when selecting the best time to harvest your marijuana crop and some of them depend on whether the plants grow outdoor or indoor. Furthermore, there is a difference between Sativa and Indica in the length of the flower and in the final result. It should be considered also the difference between early and late harvesting to encourage high head-to-body growth. Moreover, we need to take into account the issue of chemistry, since what we are actually thinking in terms of ripeness is directly linked to the chemical quality and condition of the plant at harvest time.

Many growers believe that harvesting time is a matter of personal choice. When glandular trichomes are transparent with very little, if any, coloration, THC levels are at their highest with CBD and CBN at levels that do not excessively affect THC with their sedative effects. Others prefer more intense narcotic effects, causing the resin glands to cloud and begin to amber or darken to increase the overall cannabinoid content. The resin glands appear and will therefore mature at different times. A compromise is made when deciding the desired overall maturity of the crop. It depends on the choice of the farmers in impact and palate.

The “Window” For Marijuana Harvest

This term “window” refers to the time during which the plant is at its maximum ripeness. The window must be opened when the plant is ripe first. Somewhere down the way, the plant is over-ripe, which means closing the harvest window. For most indoor-grown Indica’s, the harvest window is about two weeks long or takes a few days for various strains. Indoors, when going directly from an 18/6 hour vegetative light cycle to a 12/12 hour bud cycle, most Indicas take at least eight weeks to fully mature. As for the outdoors at the 45th parallel and the flowering times there. At the 45th parallel, most of the signs are at peak harvest starting at the beginning of October, sometimes very late in September, and continuing until the end of October, occasionally running in November during mild years or in a greenhouse. Many outdoor growers tend to harvest Indica outdoors in the second or third week of October. For Sativa grown indoors or outdoors, the window can be opened much longer. Some Sativas require up to 13 weeks to mature indoors. Outdoors, several will go well in November and even in December, if conditions are correct (again, this is close or at the 45th parallel).

Type of High

A significant factor has to do with one's preference for a high head or more of a lower body. A good head high can positively affect one's mental state just like a psychedelic, whereas a good body high is more like a narcotic "couch potato" effect. Generally, head-highs tend to be higher and body-highs tend to be lower.
